Petaling Jaya Lantern Festival 2010: Fun night of cultural shows, colourful floats and lantern parade


In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, Petaling Jaya City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya) and Cempaka Buddhist Lodge jointly organised the first-ever Petaling Jaya Lantern Festival 2010 (Pesta Tanglung Petaling Jaya 2010) on 25th September.

Thousands of people of all races and walks of life attended the event. They received goody bags containing the traditional mooncakes and paper lanterns.

The event was officiated by two Selangor state executive councillors Ronnie Liu and Teresa Kok.

Also present were Chief High Priest of Malaysia Venerable Reverand K. Sri Dhammaratana Nayaka Maha Thera who is also the Chief Abbot of the Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple in Brickfields and MBPJ councillors.

There were cultural performances by students and MBPJ cultural troupe, wushu demo and mask-changing.

The highlight of the celebration was the 3.5 km lantern parade led by Teresa Kok and accompanied by brightly-lit floats, stilt walkers, lion dance troupes and convoy of mini cars which made their way through Jalan SS23/25, SS24/1, SS23/17, SS23/13, SS24/10 and back to SS24/1 and SS23/25.

The street lights along the parade routes were decorated with brightly lit red lanterns.

Travel show host Ian Wright at Hungry Ghost celebration in SEA Park, Petaling Jaya


Renowned international traveller and television personality Ian Wright of Discovery channel fame was in Section 21 SEA Park, Petaling Jaya in Malaysia for the Hungry Ghost celebration.

Members of Ian’s camera crew were filming the entire ceremony on night of 6th September 2010, the 3rd day of the four-day grand celebration marking the Hungry Ghost Festival celebration in Section 21 SEA Park, Petaling Jaya.

The documentary show is expected to be aired on Travel Channel and Discovery Channel by end of year or early next year.

Malaysia’s multi-tasker celebrity Joanne Kam Po Po was also present with Ian.

Organized by Persatuan Penyokong-Penyokong Perayaan Poh Toh SEA Park, the four-day celebration from Sept 4 - 7, 2010 was held at a closed-off street in Jalan 21/17 in front of the wet market.

The Hungry Ghost Festival concludes with the burning of
the effigy of King of Hades or Tai Su Yeah, hell paper
money and paper effigies for the ghosts to use in the
underworld.
